Finding the ideal match of
talents/abilities with ambitions and desires
Children tend to use
imagination in the role playing activities associated with conflicts
between antagonists and protagonists such as cowboys and indians, cops
and robbers, etc. Some children also dream about becoming the
central characters in epic movie themes between "good and bad" guys,
adventure, and space exploration, etc.
Young children often
who they would like to become as an adult. Normally these "dream" jobs
do not last for very long. The question for parents is when they should
start to take these dreams seriously and develop a plan to help the
child prepare for such career choices.
If the child's
involved in a career requiring advanced education, parents may
find it necessary to provide the child with a laptop computer, web
access, and access to
tutors or various educational summer workshop and summer camps.
Increasing Participation in
It is such outside
sports whose expenses are borne entirely by the parent. It is important
that the child's participation be as a result of their own desire and
not driven by agendas of parents and/or coaches.
Parents should develop a
with their child with a participation escape clause that indicates the
responsibilities of parents and child. Review the contract annually to
ensure that everyone agrees that the terms are appropriate for the next
competitive training season.
Sometimes the exposure to
of their parents provides encouragement to enter the same fields as
their parents and even plan on attending the same schools. Most parents
are quite flattered. In some families there are problems if the child
wants to go in different directions. This is especially true when
the parent(s) have spent their lives developing a business and they
want their children to inherit and run the business.
The first step is for parents to make a frank appraisal of the reason(s) they want their child to participate in any physical activity or sport. It is suggested that you prioritize the following ideas that apply to you -
The fourth and final step is to see if you as a parent are attempting to force a square peg into a round hole. Not exactly a recipe for success. What is more likely is a frustrating experience for the child at best and at worst what can be described as a "Major Train Wreak" or catastrophe that can affect their entire life in a negative manner.
The best advice is a proactive approach to reducing injuries
Parents should always approach each new training/competitive season with a "physical" checkup of their child to ensure there aren't hidden health problems that need to be resolved to prevent life threatening emergencies.
All athletes need to improve their individual skills during their sport's "off season". This should be a less stressful environment that combine a fun atmosphere plus participation in workshops and seminars designed strengthen basic skills and all around physical fitness. The combination of this emphasis will be a major contribution for success on and off the ice.
There is an increasing number of children and adults are becoming active participants in all sorts of physical activities and sports. This can pose a risk for injuries for individuals who overdo or who don't properly train or warm-up. Cold temperatures can prove to be serious hazard for athletes of winter sports, even in unheated ice rinks unless athletes take care to warm-up and stretch prior to engaging in strenuous activities that can lead to pulled and strained muscles.
It is important to note that some individuals can use physical problems, like childhood diabetes, or lack of parental support as a motivating force that drives them to pursue success despite of obstacles they encounter on the way to achieving their athletic goals.
Support and Encouragement
It is important that a parent provide unconditional support for their children's academic endeavors, participation in sports and physical activities, plus community based volunteer organizations. Every child should learn that it is important to become involved in activities where they are not the sole beneficiary.
Sometimes children will dream of achieving seemingly impossible goals. A balance must be established between emotional support and mortgaging the farm and/or separating the family unit for the exclusive purpose of funding a child's activities. A beneficiary of financial support should be prepared to make sacrifices and living frugally as part of any agreement to receive financial support.
