Group Training Sessions

The Goal of Group Classes and Training Sessions is to Provide Quality Instruction
      
The goal of every business is to attract new customers and have a high retention rate of their repeat patronage.  This why rink management provides packages that include skate rental, public session admission, plus a series of weekly lessons. 

       Most group class programs utilize a badge system of promoting the skaters from one class level to another. When the skater progresses, they tend to purchase their own skates and add a few extra sessions to practice between classes to insure the pass the next badge.

       Many rinks encourage continued participation in group classes by offering intermediate and advanced classes to provide skills that will allow the skaters to participate in recitals, shows, carnivals and even enter low level competitions with small groups so everyone can earn a ribbon, rather than the larger groups of eight or more skaters in advance levels with only the top three receiving a small medal.

Tips for Conducting Successful Group Training Sessions:
  • Keep athletes informed of changes in schedule or activities.
  • Alter the plan according to the weather, competing activities, school schedules, etc.
  • Have all of the equipment required for the training session assembled prior to taking the ice.
  • Modify your focus before the athletes become bored and lose interest.
  • Keep drills and activities brief so athletes do not get bored.  Keep everyone busy.
  • End with a task that can incorporate challenge and fun, always giving the athletes something to look forward to at the end of practice.
  • If an activity is going well, stop the activity while interest is high. Leave them wanting more, not complaining about being over worked.
  • Off the ice, summarize the session and announce arrangements for next session.
  • Your is to teach fundamentals, but the process should generate fun, not grumbling.
      The capacity of any individual to respond to training is related to their initial level of physical fitness and the physiological characteristics of the individual. The amount of improvement is the greatest when the initial level of fitness is lowest. As the abilities of the individual increases, the pace and potential for improvement declines as the emphasis shifts to enhance fine muscle skill strength, endurance, flexibility, etc. approaches the maximum limits.

Individual Training
      The Principle of Individuality dictates that the decisions concerning the nature of training should be made with each individual athlete in mind (Rushall, 1979a). A coach must always consider that each athlete should be treated independently (Bompa, 1986, 17). Incorrect forms of training prescription result from all athletes in a team training with the same schedule and load. Attempts to copy the programs of champions, which is still a common practice among many coaches, will also result in an inappropriate  transfer of the work of training to individuals who are lower in rank.  ANY instruction should always be of the same high quality provided to advanced athletes.

Abstract
The task performance of laboratory work groups whose members were trained together or alone was investigated. At an initial training session, subjects were taught to assemble transistor radios. Some were trained in groups, others individually. A week later, subjects were asked to recall the assembly procedure and actually assemble a radio. Everyone performed these tasks in small work groups, each containing three persons of the same gender. Subjects in the group training condition worked in the same groups where they were trained, whereas subjects in the individual training condition worked in newly formed groups.

Groups whose members were trained together recalled more about the assembly procedure and produced better quality radios than groups whose members were trained alone. Through an analysis of videotape data, the mediating effects of various cognitive and social factors on the relationship between group training and performance were explored.

The results indicated that group training improved group performance primarily by fostering the development of transactive memory systems among group members.

Abstract

Two groups of severely retarded individuals were trained on a work recognition task: One group was trained individually, i.e., in one-to-one training sessions; the four members of the other group were taught simultaneously by one teacher. The group teaching strategy resulted in rates of acquisition that were similar to those found with individual instruction. Further, group training proved to be far more efficient in terms of teacher time; i.e., subjects trained as a group acquired significantly more skills in less teacher time than did individually trained subjects. The results indicate that group training is a viable and, at least in some situations, a preferable method for teaching severely retarded persons.
