Group Class Programs -
Progression of Skaters

    The success of every new ice skating facility depends on an understanding of how to adapt to the general national economic conditions and the implications to the specific geographic site's existing and potential market expansion to the base of youth, adults, and seniors who will provide the financial support necessary to support recreational and competitive ice related sports.

    There must be a pragmatic plan that goes beyond the Hollywood Field of Dreams "If you build it, they will come."  Almost every rink offers group class lessons so there is an urgent need to have a clear under- standing of what percentage of beginners who enroll in group classes will:
  1. drop out after the first class and ask for a refund
  2. not continue taking group classes after the first series of classes
  3. complete the beginning series of classes. They may skate on public sessions for fun and/or social occasions (on a date)
  4. purchase their own skates and continue to take classes Intermediate Group Classes
  5. purchase their own skates and eventually transfer laterally to Novice and Advanced Group Classes specializing in:
    • Figure Skating
    • Hockey
    • Speed Skating
  6. continue taking group classes, but also take private lessons.
  7. discontinue taking group classes in favor of private lessons.
    Skaters in groups 4 through 7 become actively involved in pursuing skating on a more seriously basis and compete in:
  • non-sanctioned hockey pickup games/practices
  • sanctioned leagues, matches, games or competitions hosted by ISI, USA Hockey, US Speed Skating, USFS,  and USA Curling associations -
    • recreational in-house leagues
    • ISI and Basic Skills competitions
  • qualifying events by participating state Interscholastic Association leagues
  • leagues, matches, games or competitions hosted NCAA club, junior varsity or varsity levels
    Most hockey, speed, and figure skaters will compete in activities hosted by their respective sports organizations as part of selecting their teams to represent the USA in international, world, and Olympic Championships.

    The most important assets to a rink are the people who operate and maintain the facilities, the personnel who instruct the group classes, and the coaches who make the recreational and competitive program successful.
