Figure Skating Pair Events

Historically there have been several figure skating pair events:
  • Mixed couples - male and female
  • Similar couples - two male or two females skating as a team
  • Fours -  two mixed couples skating in various formations
Traditionally there are two different internationally recognized figure skating disciplines for couples (man and woman) to enter - Pairs Free Skating and Ice Dancing.  The adagio form of pair skating is considered too theatrical to be considered as a sport that would qualify as an event in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships or Winter Olympics.

ISU World Figure Skating Championships and Winter Olympics Pair Events -
Pair skating consists of the following elements:
  • Individual technical elements performed solo
    • spins
    • jumps
    • footwork
  • Performance components
    • choreography
    • interpretation/artistic expression
    • skating skills
    • performance and execution
    • transitions
A strong background in free skating, especially multi-revolution jumps, is highly recommended for anyone wishing to skate competitive in qualifying pair events.
