Discovering your talents?

       Many people have trouble discovering what interests that they might have which they might pursue as a career path. What a person considers as fun when they are in their teens can change considerably as their interaction with the world widens beyond their immediate family and friends in their local community.

       Most people find going to college or joining the military to be life changing experiences resulting from meeting people of different ethnic, political, social, and economic groups. The exposure to people who hold different points of view can shake a person's concepts, especially if their immediate and extended family's views represented very similar points of view so they never experienced discussions representing more than one side of issues.

       Choosing a job because of the necessity for a regular paycheck can put career plans temporarily on hold, What is worse is that is intended to be a short, temporarily delay can easily become permanent because they have lost their inertia. The thing that most people dread is being stuck in a job that has very little opportunities for advancement and a stimulating work environment.

Is talent a natural or acquired trait?
      Many individuals believe, that unless they are born with specific talents, they will not have the passion to do a job something that can be a life long career. Actually, relatively few people display a natural talent as a young child and even those that seem to have an innate ability must acquire the necessary skills.

      It is true that there are individuals who may have to work harder at developing their talent, while others seem to experience few impediments. The number of tries you need to master a set of skills plays an important part; however, the quality of the instructor or coach, the frequency of lessons and practice, and the quality of the environment plays a role in the time and energy required for mastery. Another reason some people seem to have more talent is that they expend more energy in pursuing their goal because they are more persistent, try hardier, and participate with more passion.

Discovering your niche
      Finding something that you are passionate about requires attempting different activities to discover if your interests coincide with your undeveloped talents.

     The following approaches are recommended for discovering your interests and talents:

  • Be a leader - Don't be a follower:  You will attract attention by standing out in a smaller group rather being lost in a crowded field of aspiring athletes.  You are more likely to discover new talents in less popular activities and sports in a small group of others who also are not afraid to break free from the routine and mundane. By attempting different things you might find out that you are talented at doing something that you never expected to have any talent.
  • Step out of your comfort zone:  Far to many people fail to discover their talents because they fear to even attempt to try anything new. The fear of taking risks is common among individuals who prefer to live in their comfort zones.  Discovering your potential requires taking chances and venturing out of your comfort zone to find your real talents.
  • Try many different activities: discovering your talent requires an initial exposure to new ideas and activities - things you never tried before and ignore negative peer pressure will allow will allow  you explore hidden interests and talents.
     Parents should attempt to provide positive encouragement, but excessive enthusiasm can be even more destructive to the child. This is especially true when a child is discouraged from showing interest in another activity or direction that is not preferred by one or both of the parents.

     Children are not small identical copies of their parents. Their personalities are formed by direct observation and feelings of approval and disapproval expressed as words and treatment. Children crave positive attention, especially from their parents. The task is to provide love and emotional support of children so they can develop the confidence and independence to become solid citizens who respect the law and value being a citizen in our country.

Responsibilities of a role model
     As a parent, teacher, coach, or other role model, we can provide a positive environment for a child to develop and flourish. Sometimes limited financial resources do not allow us to contributed as much as we would like in their preparation for transition childhood into becoming an adult. As an adult, they are responsible for their own decisions and any pain, suffering, and anguish they may cause to themselves and others. We can not protect them from themselves, but our love is not conditional despite their short comings.

     Unconditional love is caring about the happiness of another person without any thought for what we might get for ourselves. This type of love doesn't mean we are not disappointed or angry when someone we care about makes foolish mistakes, when they don't do what want, or even when they cause great pain to us or someone close to us personally; however, we can stand by them and provide love and support.

     We should never allow a family member or acquaintance to use our love and respect to financially or emotionally blackmail us! It is difficult when someone becomes addicted to nicotine, alcohol, drugs, etc. and especially when their behavior involves committing crimes to support their addiction. Addiction can escalate into physical and mental abuse or injury to someone by the use of guns, driving drunk, drugs overdosing, and generally enabling any type of self destructive behavior.

Education and pursuit of an interest in the performing arts, artistic endeavors, and/or sports.
      The Hollywood movie industry used private tutors and a professional school, catering to young actors and actresses, to allow participation in movie shoots in studio and on locations.

      Today home schooling, charter schools, and internet based correspondence schools are being used to expand the options available for students whose outside activities and interests don't mesh well with physically attending classes at a traditional Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with sports and club activities after school.

      School administrators provide permission to be absent to participate in competitions and games held on campus or requiring transportation to another school campus. Some schools have lit fields that allow night baseball and football games, plus track meets.

     School sponsored athletic programs, bands, cheerleaders, drill teams, and choirs allow members permission to make up homework and tests. Students must maintain a specific grade level to remain eligible to participate in these programs. Unfortunately, programs that are not affiliated with the schools may not receive the same cooperation from school administrators.
