The International Skating Union (ISU) and the International Judging System (IJS)
The International Judging System (IJS) is the approved judging system of the International Skating Union (ISU) for all international, world, and Olympic figure skating events. It is based on providing credit for all of the things a skater does that are positive and weight that score against the negative things a skater may do while performing their program.

This system uses an independent panel to determine the technical content which has a predetermined base value for each element.  The panel of judges evaluates how well the skater performs each individual element and marks five performance areas.

The new system provides a much better system to provide information to the skater so they can see how the specific list of elements and how the judges rated them individually numerical values are published.

The IJS is very rule and regulation oriented. The technical and judging panels do not rank the skaters in an numerical order of first to last place. The high and low marks are dropped when calculating a trimmed mean score for the required elements and Program Components.
